Just to make it official:
     400MHz G4 with PCI graphics aka Yikes
     mol 0.9.48
     MacOS 8.6
     ROM 1.8.1 in my System Folder
     kernel 2.2.15pre19

The trick that eluded me was to use the 1.6 ROM as my rom.nw.

A very warm thank-you to all who helped, knowingly or otherwise.

I was starting to get jealous of the people who were complaining that
their sound didn't work, or their ethernet didn't work, when I
couldn't even get to the Happy Mac.

On to the next challenges, namely getting sound and ethernet to
work...
