I have mac8.6 on my internal 3.5gig drive, and linux on an external 350meg
HD - it's a scsi link though. I downloaded and burned a copy of the
Linux2000 CD, and followed the fairly straightforward instructions about
partitioning and formatting the external drive and it only took me an
afternoon of tinkering to get it where I wanted to be.
What you are asking is fully feasible and in my opinion much better than
using a partitioned drive.

To switch between os's you need to reboot then hold
option-command-shift-delete to bypass the internal drive and start up from
the external.
