mol, ethertap, ipchains.. protocol not avilable??

Ive got the kernel recompiled for ipmasq as well as for ethertap. and
somehow, when i do a /sbin/ifconfig tap0 [etc] it tells me

SIOCSFIADDR: no such device
tap0: unknown interface: no such device
SIOCSFNETMASK: no such device
tap0: unknown interface: no such device
tap0: unknown interface: no such device

im using the script and the procedure from the MOL faq.

im not sure why this isnt working, and ive been trying all day to get
it up and running.

any help is appreciated.
