Yes, it is very odd, but that is Apple for you. As I said in my
previous post, Apple says that the lpr protocol allows for broad
generality in the format for "computer name", and so they are
conforming to specs in just using whatever name is specified in
the file sharing control panel. I have not read the lpr specs
so I can't comment, but it sounds as though Apple is trying
to stretch the limits of what is allowed, rather than just
fixing their OS so that this feature actually works.

BTW I have forgotten how I got this explanation from Apple.
I think I complained to our higher ed sales rep, and he passed
my comments on to some tech types at Apple.
