I just have a note to add. The problem goes away if I set the main MacOS
partition to read-only. Changing the -rw/-ro status of another HFS partition
seems to have no effect. Unfortunately, MacOS isn't very useful with a
read-only disk.
I would welcome any tips on how to debug this.
