I have to say I question this as well. Given that Mac OS X is an *ix
as well, someone wanting the functionality of both Mac OS X and X
apps is better off using Mac OS X as their OS and XDarwin to run
their X apps.
A co-worker of mine recently had me believing I had woken up in an
alternate universe. He's a die-hard Linux freak with a historical,
well-educated distaste for Macs. After spending several hours on a
client's Mac OS X box a couple of weeks ago he declared, "it thinks
like *I* do! NOTHING thinks like I do!!!" and begged me for a faster
Mac than the one he had. He now has a G4 on his desk and is RABIDLY
combining OS X's environment and X. He has Gnome Panels working, is
now the official package developer of Gaim for Mac OS X, and just
won't stop.
After seeing what he has been able to accomplish, I would never run
Linux as my OS only to run OS X "inside" it. I installed YDL on mG4
tower because it's my OS 9 box and MOL accomplishes all I need VERY
handily and I wanted to reclaim the PC I currently use/need for Linux
as a full-time Windoze 2000 box. The G4 is GLORIOUSLY faster than
that PIII/450, but if I needed OS X, it'd be the primary OS.
In short, I question the wisdom of having MOL - OS X compatibility
anywhere near the top of your development list. If they need X Apps
AND OS X apps, people should be doing it the other way around.
Of course, that's just MY opinion. I could be wrong.
