no-show in chooser, OldWorld Mac/YDL

Newbie trying to setup appletalk network between MOL and YDL on an OldWorld
Powermac 7500/200. Seems like a simple thing to do, but the Linux side
doesn't show up in the chooser.
I turn on netatalk, then start MOL and Appletalk is on.
When I click on Appleshare, nothing happens even after waiting about 10
minutes.
I had previously edited /etc/stsconfig/network at the advice of a HOWTO by
Kai Staats so I could get ppp working--changing "GATEWAYDEV=eth0" to
"GATEWAYDEV=ppp0". Just tried reverting back to "eth0" for the heck of
it--but it didn't help, and ppp is now messed up.

In my /etc/molrc file, I have enabled:

netdev: eth0 -sheep

as the only network device. Is this correct?

I suppose I should upgrade to MOL (0.9.64?), and my kernel too--currently at
0.9.60/2.4.18-0.8a.
But I'm new to this, and don't want to mess anything up! If I can just get
local networking between OS 8.6 and YDL, I'll be very happy for now--then
I'll attack more advanced stuff, like ethernet and upgrading, later.

Thanks in advance for any tips, and here is the terminal output upon starting
MOL, which works great otherwise:

[root@localhost token]# startmol -a
