Ridiculously annoying CD-ROM problem which I'm surprised no one's addressed

I believe I've tried that... does this work with VPC3? Have you done this
yourself with VPC3? (Again, 3-- only 3, not 4 nor 5 nor certainly 6 ;) )
Just wanted to make sure before I bang my head against the wall for the
dozenth time ;)
