Sound question

I've been using MOL for a while now and generally it's quite
excellent, but I do have a question about the system sounds...
namely, they seem to slow everything down.  Also--related,
perhaps?--when Quicktime plays mp3s, the sound skips every
couple of seconds.  Interesting that this doesn't seem to
happen with other sound, in games and so on.  What's the
difference?  Is there a setting or option somewhere that I
have set wrong?
