I see this exact same behaviour on my radeon 7500 + apple DFP.  Try pressing 
space a few times when it goes to the black screen during molvconfig.  It 
needs to cycle throught the screens that you cannot see, or better try 
presing the N key until it it comes back to response might work as well.

molvconfig here returns a lof of false positives without actually displaying 
any of the modes for real (i.e. if I let it probe everything it responds taht 
it can do 8, 15, 24 bit for everything), and I think its definately readonfb 
being wierd.
