video beyond 8bit on 12" Powerbook G4

I have a fresh install on Yellowdog 3.0 that is also running Panther. 
When I fire up mol I can only get 8 bit video.  The closest to a solution
that I have come across is that I must recompile my kernel with
framebuffer support for nvidia.

Is this the solution or is there something I am missing?
