how to keep os x awake?

Hi,

I noticed for some time that OS X seems to "fall asleep" when through
mol and not interactively used. This even occurs if OS X file system is
used. I am not talking about a hardware sleep here, by sleep in the
discussion that follows, I mean OS X that becomes unresponsive.

This is problematic if NFS is used. NFS access will stall after a time.
Switching to OS X console will "awake" OS X and unblock NFS.

Because most of my free space is on OS X side, I download CD iso on X
but then pipe them through ssh to my PC to burn them. If OS X falls
asleep then it is problematic...

Note: In OS X, time to sleep is set to 1 hour in case this matters but period
much shorter...

Anyone seen this behaviour?
Is there a way to prevent it or some signal that could be sent to
either mol or some process of OS X to keep it awake?

Thanks in advance,
David
