Starting OS X in single user mode

Hi,

is it posible to start OS X in single user mode as it happen when
pressing Command+S while booting? Or how to activate verbose mode, like
pressing Command+V at boot time? The keys have not effect when pressing
one of them after the penguin with his apple is shown.
