I did a complete disconnect from power in order to install the usb 
adapter. Maybe I was too fast. I did it again (because this issue was 
discussed here lately) and all the usb ports are operational again. So 
this is not related to the new firmware version.

However, I observe complete machine lockups when trying to use an 
external usb 2.0 hdd. Looks like kernel panic but I don't get any error 
messages at the console. I believe this is kernel related. I am using 
kernel 2.6.27.4 right now. Will try 2.6.27.7 later. But I believe I 
should also try a proven stable one. Which kernel version is considered 
really stable on ppc64?
