Yellow Dog Linux users:
apt-get
This tool is a port (to the RPM package system) of Debian's utility by the
same name. It replaced "yup!" last year with the release of Yellow Dog Linux v2.3.
It is a very simple means of updating your local applications with 2 simple commands:
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
... as well as installing new applications:
apt-get install [app_name]

yum
This tool is a complete rewrite of 'yup!" ('Yellow Dog UPdate' became 'Yellow Dog
Update, Modified') through the effort of Seth Vidal at Duke University
(http://linux.duke.edu/projects/yum/). Yum now ships with Yellow Dog
Linux 3 and is the preferred update mechanism.
Well beyond the original capabilities of yup!, yum is a powerful upgrade
utility with advanced functionality as described here:
