TERRA SOFT SUPPLIES BOEING, AIRFORCE WITH FLIGHT SIMULATORS
Loveland, Colorado -- 1 November 2004 -- Terra Soft Solutions, Inc., leading
developer of integrated PowerPC Linux solutions has delivered 17 dual-head
Apple Power Mac G5s to Ellsworth and Dyess Airforce bases to serve as flight
simulators for the Boeing B1 bombers.
In the fall of 2003, The Boeing Company approached Terra Soft Solutions with
desire to use Apple G5 Power Macs with dual Apple Cinema Displays as the
foundation for Airforce B1 Weapons Systems Officers ("WSOs") simulation and
training environments. Terra Soft was able to quickly adapt their display
drivers to support the required dual displays while integrating a PCMCIA
flash card reader.
Boeing extracted the actual Ada95 code used on-board the B1 and the FORTRAN
and C code from its development simulators, ported it to Yellow Dog Linux,
and then ported and applied a C Motif graphical user interface which
simulates the physical switch panel and displays on-board the B1 bomber.
Following a successful demonstration of a prototype completed in early 2004,
Ellsworth and Dyess Airforce bases expressed sincere interest in this unique
solution as it enables the WSOs to conduct realtime training without the cost
and risk of actual flight time.
Based upon the successful deployment of the initial production units, Boeing
and Terra Soft are providing many more of these units for the B1 program. In
addition, it is likely that other aircraft will be simulated on a similar
system in the near future, resulting in the potential of greater than 200
systems to ship in 2005.
