MITSUBISHI RESEARCH INSTITUTE USES CELL/B.E. IN INVENTORY DATA MONITORING FOR
ASSET-BASED LENDING

Real-time analysis of numerous amount of chronological inventory data Began
providing service to the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ

Mitsubishi Research Institute, Inc. (MRI) and Fixstars Corporation have
cooperatively developed an inventory data monitoring system utilizing the
Cell Broadband Engine™ (Cell/B.E.) for asset-based lending (ABL). Based on
this system, MRI is providing real-time inventory fluctuation analysis tool
to the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ.

This inventory data monitoring system was developed for ABL asset analysis.
ABL is a form of lending based on very liquid assets such as inventory and
accounts receivable, a form of financing that does not depend upon mortgage
collateral or personal guarantees. It is becoming increasingly common,
especially with small and medium sized enterprises.

MRI and the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ have cooperatively developed a
quantitative inventory fluctuation identification and analysis model through
a joint research project to develop ABL business by utilizing risk assessment
and mathematical methods.

MRI, in providing an analysis tool based on this model, has decided to use the
Cell/B.E. as the system platform to handle the visualization of large volumes
of data and for extracting characteristic properties. In order to extract
characteristic properties, the inventory fluctuation data is analyzed from
various viewpoints.

In building the inventory data monitoring system, MRI chose the Cell/B.E.
programming specialists Fixstars to collaborate on the project. Incorporating
Cell/B.E. mathematical methods into the analysis model enhanced its execution
speed which allowed it to perform real-time analysis of the relationships
between inventories for very many chronologically ordered inventory data.

Mathematical methods, regardless of being value or volume based, introduced
for this analysis use a non-linear chronological model to analyze the
inventory fluctuations. This allows the system to scientifically and
automatically detect anomalies in the fluctuations, requiring vast volumes of
data processing and associated computational burden. By taking advantage of
Cell/B.E.'s strength in parallel processing, it was possible to
simultaneously realize both fast execution times and precision analysis.

MRI provides the analysis tool to the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ for
detecting properties hidden in inventory fluctuations by using this system in
the ABL field that is expected to see growth.

Moving forward, MRI plans on providing services based on this analysis model
in fields other than finance such as logistics and manufacturing.
