GDM login?

I have a G4 with an Apple 15" Flat Panel display running YDL 2.1.

I currently have it set to runlevel 3.  When I set it to 5, the 
screen blanks and the little light on the display starts to blink, 
indicating it's getting a signal request it can't display.

If I CTRL-ALT-F1 I can see the login screen for a split second as I 
switch VT, but I can never see it to use it.

I can issue "startx" after a CLI login, and that works great.  But 
I'd like the graphical login interface.

I've run Xconfigurator about a dozen times with many combinations to 
no avail.  Any thoughts?
