GDM login?

I just hooked up a Gateway VX900 19" display (CRT) and GDM came up fine.

I've been backwards and forwards through the /etc/X... tree and am 
still not finding whatever GDM reads to determine monitor settings. 
It's clearly NOT related to whatever happens when a user types 
"startx" from the command line, as THAT works just FINE.
