no color in terminal

A rather annoying problem has developed, and while I would love to give
background as to the how... I have no idea. So the problem:

all my terminals are monotone. No color for the text. Makes it hard to tell
what's what when you're so used to seeing them. The odd thing is that if I
su or login as root the colors are normal in the terminal. I've tried
replacing the termcap file with a downloaded one, no change.

What's my problem here?
