Help with remote server & email!

Hi!

I've got what I think is a unique situation, but which probably isn't. 
I'm
upgrading to an 8500/G3 running YDL 2.1 (yeah, I know 2.2 is out, but 
I've
already spent more time than I should have) from a 7100 running MKLinux.
But that isn't my problem.

It's mail. Specifically SMTP. I want to prevent relaying, but my 
situation
all but precludes this.

Here's the setup. 8500/G3 w/YDL at a location in NYC running web and 
e-mail
services for my domain. The problem is, I am never at that location! I
usually access the server via my cable modem in NJ.

Since I'm not on the same network, or even in the same domain as the
server, anytime I send mail, it's considered a 'relay' (please correct me
if I'm wrong at any point here...)

I've got MKLinux (current server) set up as well as I can with sendmail 
set
to use the RBL to hopefully prevent relaying from unauthorized sites. I
would prefer to lock it down completely, but I have to send mail!

On the new server, I'm replacing sendmail with Postfix. I was trying to 
use
SASL with postfix, but had problems with compling and configuring.

I also have had problems getting Courier-IMAP working, or compiling.

I wanted to see if the group would have some answers to a few questions.

1) If I use IMAP as my only way to get mail, does that eliminate the
'relay' from my NJ machine to the YDL server in NYC? i.e. does the smtp
server think I'm logged in locally?

2) If I used a web mail system to access my e-mail via SSL & the WWW, 
does
THAT eliminate the relay? I may want to go this way in addition to IMAP,
since I should be able to get there from anyplace.

3) what's a good web mail system to run atop Postfix on YDL?

4) What other SMTP authentication daemons/programs/whatever do people 
have
working on YDL, preferrably with Postfix?

5) I use OS X as my desktop OS at home. Would it be possible for me to 
use
the SMTP server on that machine, and avoid worrying about the rest? All 
of
my incoming mail would still go to NYC & into my POP mailbox on the YDL
machine.

I am the only 'user' who currently gets mail using this server, so if I
need to jump through a couple hoops to get mail, that's OK. I would just
rather avoid using PINE in an SSH session...

I'm not that 'saavy' with Linux yet, so keep that in mind when 
responding!
:-) I can follow detailed instructions very well (and learn something in
the process!)
