ADB mouse not working in X

If I boot straight into the graphical login, my ADB mouse doesn't work. If I
go for text login and run startx, it does work.

I've tried some of the suggestions such as removing 'Load "dri"' from
XFConfig-4, plus changing the "device" "/dev/mouse" to "/dev/input/mice",
but nothing makes any difference.

I know the obvious thing is to boot into text mode, but I don't know how to
change my preference from graphical to text!

If anyone has any ideas on what might be causing the mouse problem, that'd
be great. Failing that, how can I change my boot preference?
