Startup items

Hi.  I have YDL2.2 running on my Performa 6400.
(I used to have the transaction set error installing,
but I managed to fix it.)

My question is about startup items...  I need to run
pump to use my DSL router for internet access.  I set
it to run at startup by adding it to my rc.local file,
but for some reason that makes KDE stall.  It gets to
the second stage (setting up interprocess communication
or something like that) and just freezes, with the KDE
loading screen eventually disappearing, but still nothing
happens.  I have to control-alt-delete my way out of it.

Any ideas?
I find myself longing for Classic Mac OS-style startup
items :)
