Possibly by two declarations of the default gateway - one added when you
configured the interface, another automatically added by a PPP connection
or something.

You can get rid of one of them, and things won't change. Do you have 2
gateways as soon as you establish your first connection? Or does the
second come along at your second (re-)connection?
