powerbook 2400: pmud fails on boot

I have YDL 2.2 running on my PB 2400. pmud works fine under the 
2.2.18-1r kernel inclluded with the distro. However, it fails on startup 
under the 2.4 kernel. I have recompiled from source, to no avail.

/var/log/boot.log only says "pmud: pmud startup failed"

Any ideas?
