unable to mount cdrom

upon booting YDL 2.2 after a clean install i attempted to eject the
cdrom because i'd wanted to test sound and try to get an mp3 going.

when i typed in "eject" at the command line it said "unable to open
/dev/cdrom". figured maybe i had to unmount it first. so i typed in
umount /dev/cdrom

it told me it wasnt mounted. curiouser and curiouser. tried to mount the
cdrom and it said it couldnt mount it because "/dev/cdrom is not a valid
block device"

ack!! what do i do?? i was able to get the cdrom out via poking a paper
clip into the lil button off to the right of te cd entry tray and force
it out (i hate doing that).

anyone know what i can do? its impossible that YDL cant use the cdrom
since it used the cdrom to install the darn thing. im using a bondi blue
imac, 500MHz, 256mb ram.

thanks,

ryan
