Problems with monitor resolutions

During the installation program of YDL 2.0 I was
presented with a list of monitor resolutions I wished
to be supported on my machine. I selected nothing
higher than 800x600. But when I booted into KDE and
Gnome, I realized that I was in 1024x768 mode using
thousands of colors. So, I went to the console and
typed fbset -yres 800 -xres 600... and then the screen
went black. My question is... how do I get into
800x600 on my iMac? Is it because I had thousands of
colors enabled? Is that too many for 800x600? I had
millions of colors on the MacOS partition. Would that
effect the Linux side? Any help would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks.
