glibc installation troubles

This evening I ran apt-get dist-upgrade to get the latest set of security
updates and bugfixes since I installed 2.3.  However, when it gets to
installing glibc-common, it gives this error message:

memory alloc (4 bytes) returned NULL.

I also get the same error when downloading and trying to install the
glibc-common package manually.

Can anyone tell me what's happening/how to fix this?
