External display on a PowerBook 3400

I have a Powerbook 3400, and would like to use an external monitor with
it. I have tried several thing, but I can't get it working.

I have created a second Monitor section and a second screen section. But
it does not work. 

How do I make it run? And If I get it working, how do I configure it to
use a resoultion diffrent from the lcd, e.g. 1024x768 insted of 800x600.
