XFree fails at boot-time

I had recently re-installed YDL 2.3 on my Pismo (was running 2.2 nicely) and
tried it a couple of times (I run OS X 10.1.5 mostly).

Yesterday I decided to boot YDL and during startup I saw an error from gpm
then later I am unable to login (I have it set to graphical login.)
Obviously, if gpm fails at startup there is no mouse device so X fails to
load. Now it is stuck in a loop trying to get to a login screen. I don't
remember how to boot into single-user screen to disable graphical login.
