When prompted for which kernel to boot into, do not allow the default to
be used. Type the name of the default kernel label followed by a "1"
(for single user) or "3" (another common runlevel that usually doesn't
include starting X). Tweak your XF86Config settings and test it by
running 'startx' or 'xdm/gdm/whatever' manually. If possible, it's
easier to log into the machine remotely and test using 'init 3/init 5'
(or the above). Good luck!
