KDE Slowdown

Using YDL 2.3. I never had the slow problem with it, until now. 

I don't know what caused it, because I had a bunch of stuff running at the time, but KDE had a bad spell. I thought it had frozen, so I tried to kill X, which eventually worked, but now the X startup is dreadfully slow. I'm using a text login. As soon as I do a startx, it slows immediately. The last time I logged in, it took a half an hour for KDE to finish its startup sequence. I checked the qt installation, apt says it is up to date. I ran Xconfigurator to freshen up the X config file, and I did an apt-get upgrade because it was due anyway, no joy. It seems to be KDE-related, non-KDE programs startup and run fine under KDE, but kmail takes over a minute to start, and Konquerer is also snail-paced at startup, opening a new window, and repainting.

Obviously something is badly broken. 
Any ideas on what to look for (besides 8:20PM Tuesday) or where to look for it?
