Darn QPopper, configure problems

Just installed YDL 2.3, configured a few things, and went to do a
./configure on Qpopper4.0.4.  I get as a result,
checking for gcc... gcc
checking whether the C compiler (gcc  ) works... no
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot
create executables.

I have installed the following:
[root@lala qpopper4.0.4]# rpm -q glibc
glibc-2.2.5-0.19b
[root@lala qpopper4.0.4]# rpm -q glibc-common
glibc-common-2.2.5-0.19b
[root@lala qpopper4.0.4]# rpm -q gcc
gcc-2.95.4-4j
[root@lala qpopper4.0.4]# rpm -q compat-libs
compat-libs-5.2-2

Now, I really tried to select as much dev tools as possible during the
initial install.  Anyone, anyone, have any ideas on what the cause of this
is, and how to get this damn thing installed?
