no console on 2.4.20 /w Ibook.

  I've been trying to upgrade to 2.4.20 for the better usb support.  The 
problem I've always run into is the kernel does not display the console 
to my screen.  The system boots as I can login and type reboot.  The ydl 
kernel works just fine.  Is there some kernel option, or patch I'm 
missing.  I've tried 2.4.20, 2.4.20-ac1, and 2.420 from 
http://www.ppckernel.org.
