update LinuxPPC from YDL RPMs?

The machine won't boot from the YDL 2.3 CD. So I was assuming I would need
to reinstall Mac OS and start the YDL installer from there. Can I start the
installer on the CD having booted up in LinuxPPC? I can mount the YDL CD
ROM and read it just fine.
