All of that is working great for me as well, on
my Ti PB 550 with Yellow Dog 2.2. However, I am 
running X on 1152x768 as you but only at 16 bits, 
which I got with the safe mode option with 
Xconfigurator. You say high color, is this 24-32 bits?
