Well I have CONFIG_FB_RIVA enabled in my kernel and just use the novideo
option, but it's probably best to have CONFIG_FB_RIVA disabled initially,
when trying to get X working. And definitely get a fresh rsync of the
2.4.19-pre8-ben0 kernel. Since I don't know offhand what config options
the www.ppckernel.org kernels were built with, I can't recommend them
at this point. In just checking the site, the most recent build is from
May 7th, so it might not be quite recent enough either.

I am also using a VGA connected monitor.
