Ok, so I'm clueless. :) Setting up an external modem.

Jackie,

I would suspect the problem is the Linux setup before I would suspect the modem (in other words, you may acquire a different modem and still have
the problem).

There are at least two kinds of modems: those that plug into the computer bus directly (commonly called internal modems) and those that plug into an
interface device that sits on the computer bus (commonly called external modems). I think the modem you have (and need) is the latter. Is it a
stand alone box with its own power cord and interface cable to a round connector on the back of the 6500? This kind of modem should work with any
computer with an RS-232 serial interface. Older Macs did not have RS-232 interfaces, but a serial interface which could be configured to work well
enough as RS-232 to operate modems, serial printers, and Appletalk. To make this modem work under Linux, the first thing you need is to make sure
the drivers for the serial interface are installed. After those are working, then Linux should be able to talk to the modem. I don't have them in
front of me, but there are two How-Tos that are particularly relevant - the "Serial How To" and (surprise!) the "Modem How To" (both can be found
at
http://www.linux.org ). These have much more information than you need, but they discuss what drivers are needed and how to test the serial link
to the modem. After the drivers are working, then you may need to look at the documentation for the modem and determine the initialization string
(often called "chat string") for the modem. This string sets the various options for the modem. It may work right out of the box. On the
otherhand, it may need to be configured. Configuring a modem is a topic for another thread.

Even if you have an internal modem (as on the G3's and G4's), you still need the serial driver to be set up.

Good luck.
