Check /var/log/XFree86-0.log.  It may have some information on why 
XF86 is selecting another resolution.

BTW, you may actually want 1280x960 on your monitor.  x960 is a 4:3 
aspect ratio resolution, x1024 is 5:4.  Most monitors are 4:3, so you 
can't expand a 5:4 resolution to fill the screen on them without 
getting an image that is squashed vertically.  The only 5:4 monitors 
I know of are 17" and 18" LCD monitors whose native resolution is 
1280x1024.
