Install on 8500

Are you doing a text install, with no video driver checked? I got 2.3
on a stock 8600 using the gui installer, worked just fine. My 8600
at home with cpu and video upgrades worked better with a text
install, and now works fine too.
I always use the default, recommended install (workstation).
Maybe you have a bad CD? How much HD space are you giving for "/"
