- If you're running GMC or nautaluis, you should be able to open a shell 
  and start a new panel and use it to logout
- You can ssh into the machin and send a HUP to the gdm process which 
  should gracefuly kill everything, restart X and dring you back to a 
  login window

Note, that, you shouldn't just leave a user logged into a server when said 
user isn't there :)
