Cannot Boot on G4 (Jim Steed)

Similar problem (I think)...

Last night I tried, for the first time, to get linux running on a mac
(yellow-dog 2.3).  Firstly I tried entering the GUI install.  I got a blank
screen.  Then I tried entering the text install.  I got a blank screen.
Finally I tried the text-safe-mode option and that allowed me in.  I went
through a very familiar "Red Hat" text install program and chose the text
login instead of the gui.  On completing the installation I rebotted and got
the options (l) for linux and (m) for mac os 9 (having followed the
instructions for a dual boot single disk in the YDL booklet).  I chose l for
linux and it brought up another boot: prompt (I hope this is yaboot not
bootx though I can't remember chosing one over the other).  After that brief
display I got the blank screen again and this is where my adventure ended.
Does anybody know why or perhaps any idea about how I can find my way to a
shell.

I'm running a G4 and I have the "Studio Display" screen (model m7768 if that
matters).

Hello,

I am trying to install YDL on a G4 Dual 1.25 GHz processor (the new G4 with
the four holes punched out of the front).  I have made it through the
install process, however, currently, I cannot get either YDL or Mac-OS-X to
boot from the Yaboot menu.  In either case, after a one line message, the
screen clears to a white-grey color, and the machine becomes completely
nonresponsive.

After not receiving responses to previous messages to the list, I took a
risk and tried downgrading my video card (Radeon 9000 Pro to a Radeon 7000
Mac Version) and my monitor (ADC LCD to standard VGA), but after a reinstall
I am still stuck at the same white-grey screen.

Has anyone seen this white-grey screen before?  What did you do to get
around it?  Has anyone successfully installed on a newer G4?  I have been
stuck at the same place for about 10 days now, and am really frustrated.  If
I could only get to a prompt, I would be so ecstatic, but all I get "Loading
second stage bootstrap" and a blank screen.
