Imagemagick is certainly quite nice and will do alot of what 
GraphicConverter will do, though the UI is terminal based, as noted.  
makes for easy scripting and whatnot but... Well you know :)

The GIMP is much like photoshop and has a batch command set like 
photoshop as well.

ee and eog are image viewers.
