Weird battery problem....

I have a 2002 iBook. When unplugging external power, within a few minutes it 
reports that it's about to run out of battery, and shuts down. I plug the 
power in, boot into OS X and it reports about 5% charged. After 10 or so 
minutes, it reports 100% charged and when I unplug the power, it decreases at 
a normal rate - or it did for the 20 or so minutes that I had it unplugged. 
What's up with what YDL 3.0 is doing with the battery?
