I experienced similar problems.  Except, I had tried to install a package s=
o did
a 'apt-get -f install' which cleared up the things as you mentioned.  After=
 that
I did an update/upgrade and some errata were installed.  I then tried to do=
 an
upgrade or install (can't remember which) and got the thousand or so packag=
es.
I had installed from the original isos on an iBook rev 2.2.

This was just yesterday, so I hadn't had a chance to really look into it.
