Behaviour of eth0 not understood

Thanks to those who answered me!

John, I can't believe that I have a hardware problem: my setup is simply an
iMac connected to Internet via an ADSL modem (USB Speedtouch). It works
perfectly under MacOS; and the Internet connection used to work under Linux
in the pre-adsl days.

It is the combination Linux-cum-adsl that gives me trouble. As a matter of
fact, I have been unable to make it work, whether I try rp-pppoe or
speedtouchconf. According to some error messages, it would seem that "ppp0
does not connect". Perhaps the strange lines on the log are related to this.

I have just made a little Google search on "pppoe and eth0". There were lots
of answers, which I found not very informative and rather confusing. They
often talk of "configuring the Ethernet card", but I don't see what the
Ethernet card of an iMac is (there seems to be some sort of built-in
circuit) and still less how to configure it.

I should be grateful for any further suggestions.

Regards.

Charles

This is a hardware problem, not all hub/switches work with all network
cards!

What hub or either net switch are you using? I tried several 100/10bt
hubs with my Powerbook. I have had success with the Linksys BEFSR41
four port switch.
