The debian folks have an HFS boot floppy used as the first step in their 
install. However, they also provide a script so you can change the 
target to the hard drive (e.g. root=/dev/sda5).

It works great! No MacOS bootstrap partition (bootX) or open firmware 
hacks (quik) are needed.

You can get the boot floppy from debian.org mirror sites and there is a 
link to the perl script in the debian PPC install guide.
