Problems with sleep on ibook

I am running YDL 3.0 on a brand new ibook and the problem I am having is 
that if the computer has been on for any ammount of time, it will not go to 
sleep when you shut the lid.  It will do it when it is freshly started up, 
but not later.  Is there any way to find out why and correct it?
