GNOME main menu

Hi.

Quick question: how does one add a new submenu to the GNOME main menu?
Doing this globally would be nice, but I will settle for a local
change (for some account) too.

I tried to do this following the GNOME documentation but it looks like
the Red Hat version of GNOME is so heavily modified in terms of menus
that nothing looks as the said documentation says it should look.
