Cinema Display with ATI Radeon 9600 Pro

I'm having trouble with using my 23" Cinema Display with an ATI Radeon 
9600 Pro.  I can get it to work full resolution (1920x1200) in 8-bit color 
mode (with really messed up colors), but haven't been able to get it into 
16 or 24-bit color mode.  I have to boot with video=ofonly in order to get 
any sort of a text console at all.  Anybody have any pointers (or 
XF86Config, or fbmodes.txt file with the right resolutions).  Any help 
would be appreciated.
